The archaeological site of Ingapirca is the most important and significant of Ecuador. Archaeologists have determined that the foundation took place in the late fifteenth century and they think that the Cañaris, a small tribe that populated the Andes in southern Ecuador, were the original inhabitants of the site until the arrival of the Inca Empire. The archaeological remains are located 90 kilometers north of the city of Cuenca.
