The highlights of the trip in the Andes: visiting the historical center of Quito, cultural heritage of humanity, the indigenous markets of Otavalo and Saquisilí, the Cuicocha and Quilotoa lagoons, the Cotopaxi, Chimborazo and Antisana volcanoes, the moor and their condors.
Our trip will culminate with a unique experience in the heart of the Amazon jungle.

Departure each Saturday from Quito

We leave when possible, meals at your expense.
Ecuador is a nice country for travellers who want to discover different experiences of taste. There are a huge variety of meals, gourmet restaurants or simply small dining places in markets and villages.
Meals mentioned in the program are included and those not mentioned are left to your choice. Your guide and traveling companion will tell you interesting places or restaurants, and may also assist you in your discovery, if you wish.

Day 1: Quito Colonial - Middle of the World

Visit of colonial Quito, Cultural Heritage and Equatorial Line monument.(Middle of the World). Hotel in Quito.   

In Colonial Quito, we´ll go to the Panecillo, small hill overlooking Quito, on which stands the statue of the Virgen de Legarda and delimiting the colonial town of San Francisco de Quito. Then, we will go to the Independence Square, where is located the Presidential Palace, the Cathedral and the Archbishop's Palace. Walking towards the Plaza de San Francisco, we stop at the Church of the Company of Jesus. Visit the Franciscan Monastery, Baroque monument located in Plaza San Francisco and visit the museum of religious art Fray Pedro Gocial which is right next door.

At the Middle of the World, we will visit the site that represents the symbolic pass of the parallel Zero or Equator and its ethnographic museum.  Also we will visit the Inti Nan museum showing some physical laws related to gravity and its influence and astronomical knowledge that Aboriginal groups Inca and Pre Inca had.

Day 2: Quito - Ruins of Cochasquí -  San Pablo Lagoon - Otavalo
 Departure to Imbabura province. Visit of Cochasquí Pyramids. Walk from Peguche to San Pablo Lagoon (beautiful rural scenery). Hotel in Otavalo. B

Day 3: Otavalo Market – Cuicocha Lagoon - Latacunga
Breakfast. Visit of the traditional and handicraft Market of Otavalo. Departure to Cuicocha Lagoon. Walk around the lagoon. Departure to Latacunga in the afternoon. Hotel in Latacunga. B

The indigenous Otavalo market is with no doubts one of the most important markets in south America. It is the ideal place to buy gifts and souvenirs for family and friends.

The market was developed in the 60s and still remains, Ecuadorians come from all over the country to see the wide variety of products at their disposal. Tourists also marvel at the colorful textiles, straw hats (Panama), ponchos and Silver jewelery.

Cuicocha lagoon is along with the lagoon of Quilotoa one of the most beautiful lagoons of altitude in Ecuador. It forms part of the ecological reserve Cotacachi - Cayapas. We will take a short hike to admire the landscape.

Day 4: Latacunga -  Quilotoa Lagoon - Chugchilán

Departure to the community and lagoon of Quilotoa. Descent to the bottom of the crater to the edge of the lagoon. Hike from Quilotoa to Chugchilán (5 hours walk, flexible depending of the group, others options are possible). Overnight in Chugchilán. B - L (box lunch) - D

On the way to Quilotoa, we will cross by the town of Pujilí, famous for the celebration in June of the Andean fiesta of Corpus Christi, with its main character the Danzante, which coincides with the summer solstice. We continue the path that rises to about 4000 meters, where you can see local people work the land and produce many products, especially potatoes, wheat, quinoa and corn, besides other vegetables and sure to look at Cotopaxi and also the two peaks of the Ilinizas, and if you are lucky you will also see several volcanoes such as Chimborazo, Tungurahua and Altar, among others, as well as a good view of the city of Latacunga. Passing by the town of Tigua you´ll see the handicrafts produced locally by people, paintings on goat skin and masks and other wood carvings created by local artisans . You can find also highly refined textiles made in sheep wool and alpaca wool, you will marvel at the scenery in one of the most traditional Andean lands.

Quilotoa Volcano is a unique site in Ecuador with more than 3 km. in diameter and a height difference of 320 m. between the edge of the crater and lagoon. The indigenous community living there offers lodging, thus maintaining closer contact with local people.

Day 5: Chugchilán - Lasso  

Breakfast. Beginning of the Walk towards the village of Chugchilán with a privileged view of the Western Cordillera and the rivers Toachi and Sigüe. We can observe beautiful rural scenes (3 to 4 hours of walking). Lunch and transfer to Lasso, a small town located in the vicinity of Cotopaxi National Park. Hotel in Lasso. B - L

Day 6: Lasso – Saquisilí Market -  Cotopaxi National Park - Baños

Breakfast, early departure to visit the Saquisilí market. Continue to Cotopaxi National Park. In the park, we´ll stop at the Limpiopungo lagoon (3830 m), to observe the birds typical of the Andean moor, and then continue by car until we reach the parking area (4500 m).
From here we begin a hike (364 meters of difference in altitude) to José Ribas refuge at 4864 m.
On the way back, we will have a brief visit to the park museum and continue towards Baños, whose characteristic are the natural sources of hot springs. Hotel in Baños. B - L (Box lunch)

Baños is a charming resort site, with its hot springs, located at the gateway of the Amazon and the edge of the Andes.
The beauty of the place and the hospitality of its inhabitants make of Baños a popular destination. Nestled in the midst of a green valley, the city, surrounded by forests, waterfalls and at the foot of the active volcano Tungurahua 5016m, offers lush vegetation..  

Day 7: Baños
Breakfast.  Visit of Baños town. Excursion to the waterfalls route and “Pailon del Diablo”. We will cross the Pastaza river in tarabita (cable cart). Observation of Tungurahua volcano. Hotel in Baños. B

We will visit the impressive waterfall Pailón del Diablo. Beside the Manto de la Novia waterfall, crossing the river Pastaza in Cable cart, conveyance of the local people living near the river surrounded by cliffs. If weather permits, we´ll see the almost constant activity of the Tungurahua volcano..

Day 8: Riobamba – Chimborazo Reserve - Machachi

 Breakfast. Departure to the Chimborazo wildlife reserve. Arrival at the first refuge Carrel Bros. at 4800 m. of altitude and then start the ascent to Whymper refuge at 5000 m.of altitude. Box lunch at the refuge. Visit of the glacier and observation of vicuñas. Departure to Machachi, little city located to the south of Quito. Night in hostel in Machachi.  B - L (Box lunch) - D
Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve: For several years, a reintroduction program of vicuñas and llamas began with the cooperation of indigenous communities living in those areas of the paramo. They are very easy to observe. In addition, the Chimborazo, the highest peak of Ecuador 6310 m. is a volcano that is a great attraction for mountaineers and for those who appreciate the beauty of the landscapes.           

Day 9: Antisana Reserve - Papallacta hot springs

 Departure towards the Antisana reservation: observation of condors. Excursion around La Mica lagoon. Continue to the village of Papallacta to enjoy the hot springs. Night bus to the city of Lago Agrio or return to Quito if you travel by plane the next day to the jungle.  Overnight in Quito. B L

Day 10: Quito – Flight to Lago Agrio – Amazon Jungle Trip (Amazonia)

Transfer to the airport of Quito and flight to the Jungle (Town of Lago Agrio). Meeting with your guide at the airport and beginning of your trip in the jungle where we will take private transportation to the entrance of Cuyabeno reserve. On our way you´ll have lunch. Then you take a motorized canoe down the Cuyabeno River for about 2H30. During the canoe ride you will get a first look at the jungle and will be able to observe different kind of birds like Caciques, Oropendolas, Greater Anis and the prehistoric bird "Hoatzin".
You may also be able to see a variety of monkeys and other jungle animals, depending on the time and weather conditions.

Approximately we arrive at 16.30 to the cabins, where you will stay. After a short break, we will walk having the possibility to swim in the "Laguna Grande" and watch the sun fall. We return to the lodge for dinner, ending our first day of activities.  Lodging in cabins. L (box lunch) - D

Day 11: Stay in the Amazon jungle

After breakfast we will take a hike in the primary forest for 3 to 4 hours,  The guide will give us explanations about the tropical forest and medicinal plants. You will also be able to observe big trees like the Ceibo or small insects like ants.

We will then return to the camp for lunch and a short resting time. In the afternoon you will go in a canoe searching the beautiful pink dolphins, looking at the impressive butterflies, or an anaconda sunbathing in a tree, have a swim in the lagoon and watch the sunset.
You will return to the camp for dinner, and take a night canoe ride to look for caimans.  Lodging in Cabins. B –    L - D
Day 12: Stay in the Amazon jungle

For those of you who are willing to see the sun rise, you can go for an early morning bird watching canoe ride at around 6 o'clock. You will return to the camp for breakfast, and then depart in native, dugout canoes to visit a family of the community of Tarapuy. You will see how Casabe is prepared, traditional bread made from Yucca (Manioc). You can help prepare the Casabe and see how only material from the jungle is used in making the bread. That is an activity during the all morning, return to the lodge around 2 pm. for lunch, in the afternoon you´ll have relaxing activities and at night, you can go on a short nocturnal hike through the primary forest in search of insects, spiders, geckos or scorpions, and listen to the night sounds of the jungle. Day 13: Stay in the Amazon jungle

We depart in native, dugout canoes, called "Quilla", to visit smaller lagoons such as Pato Cocha, and Caimán Cocha.
While paddling you have a better opportunity to see more fauna and flora, and you can get a good idea of what an igapo (flooded) forest looks like. You can observe a variety of different birds and monkeys. Because this activity is about 4 - 5 hours long, we take a box lunch with us.

Return to the lodge and rest, for those who wish can swim in the lagoon and enjoy the beautiful colors of sunset. Lodging in cabins B – L (Box lunch) - D

Day 14: Stay in the Amazon jungle -  Quito

 Opcional We leave the lodge at 6 am (optional) and canoeing to observe a variety of birds and monkeys. After breakfast we take the motorized canoe to head back to the entrance of Cuyabeno reserve, from where we take transportation directly to the airport in Lago Agrio. Flight to Quito. Transfer to your hotel. Hotel in Quito.   B - L (Box lunch)
